Which is better, braces or Invisalign?

Ever since modern dentistry brought Invisalign to the market, there has been an ongoing debate as to which orthodontic treatment is best. The easy answer is that both treatments are highly effective, but it all boils down to the condition of your teeth in order to determine which treatment is best for you.

Traditional braces are commonly used and many of us may immediately think of a teenager when we think of braces. It is true that metal braces are more commonly used in our younger patients, however, Invisalign can be used in patients of all ages. Braces can be used to correct a variety of dental issues like crowding, overcrowding, bite problems, gaps between teeth, misalignment and more! Modern braces are also becoming more effective and are now be offered in different materials like clear braces and ceramic braces.

Invisalign is a highly effective orthodontic treatment that is use for minor misalignment, gaps and crowding. During the Invisalign treatment, clear trays are provided by our dentist that will be exchanged out every couple of weeks. Typically, results are quick and can be seen within a few months. Invisalign is also a great choice for adults that may be self-conscious about getting traditional braces. Additionally, Invisalign is removable which allows for comfortable eating while also promoting hygiene since it is easier to brush your teeth and clean the trays.

Please contact our office for more information on both Invisalign and braces. After a consultation, our dentist will help you decide which one is best for you!

Am I too old for braces?

Braces are used as to correct bite problems and tooth misalignment, whether it is due to gaps, overcrowding or a variety of other dental issues. Most of the population identifies braces as orthodontic treatment that is often completed during late childhood and early teen years. However, braces can be used by patients of all ages. You are never too old to have braces.

While it is recommended to get orthodontic treatment in childhood and adolescence, it is not always accessible at this age depending on the individuals given situation. Some patients may not be able to get braces until later in life, which is completely okay. Thanks to modern dentistry, there are now other orthodontic methods that can be used to correct the same imperfections as traditional metal braces without them being visible or uncomfortable. These methods include Invisalign, Inman Aligners or ceramic braces which are all offered by our dentists in Glendale and Van Nuys.

If you would like to know more information about braces or other orthodontic treatments offered by our dentists, please feel free to contact any one of our offices. Remember, there is no age limit for braces and you are never too old to get the smile you deserve.

Complications From Braces

At Cyberdent we strongly encourage our patients to maintain an impeccable oral hygiene particularly for the ones wearing braces. Poor maintenance during orthodontic treatment can lead to the damage of the enamel of the teeth.

The following case shows the result of enamel degradation after braces. We had to treated these teeth with porcelain veneers to restore the natural shape, shade, and functionality of the teeth.

How to Care for Braces?

Today, more than ever before, children and teens alike are choosing braces to correct dental imperfections and as a measure to straighten and properly align their entire teeth structure. Also, it is widely used as a complement to both clinical and cosmetic procedures. Here are a few useful tips to follow when taking care of your braces and to avoid accidents that may permanently harm both your teeth and inner gum.

  • Choosing the right toothbrush There are many specialized tooth brushes available in the market that are designed specifically for people having braces. Therefore, make sure that you get the one that suits your needs.
  • Brush with care When you first get the braces, you may find it difficult to brush at first. However, if you get the right tooth brush, it will be much easier for you to perform this activity. Do not try to use rigorous motions, use soft strokes. Also, do not forget to brush at least twice a day so that no big chunks of food particles stay in your teeth.
  • Floss Flossing is essential for you because you have braces. Therefore make sure to floss regularly, even daily so that smaller food particles do not stay stuck in the braces and create cavities in the teeth.

  • Avoid few food items Getting braces may also mean that you cannot chew a bubble gum anymore. Avoid any foods that are hard to chew. This may include carrots and other such vegetables which need to be chomp a lot as it may hurt your teeth. Moreover, stay away from gooey sticky substances as well. You should avoid chocolates, too much cheese and noodles. These substances tend to stay inside the small spaces of the braces and are often hard to remove with simple brushing. Moreover, they will decay over there and cause your teeth further damage.
  • Wear your mouthguard and headgear Whenever you go out, remember to always wear a mouthguard and a headgear. These two items help protect your teeth from physical damages. The headgear is particularly used to help keep the teeth perfectly aligned.
  • Don't miss an appointment Never miss your appointments with your dentist at either Van Nuys or Glendale.Always come for regular checkups to make sure everything is working right. Remember that wearing braces takes a long time and you must regularly visit your dentist at Van Nuys or Glendale, if you want the process to follow the right direction. By doing this, your dentist will be able to fix any damaged braces in time and also help you achieve the perfect smile you dream of, which is your current goal.
