Dental Care During Pregnancy

Dental care during pregnancyPregnancy is often an exciting time in a woman's life. The joy of motherhood can bring so much emotion and excitement that sometimes the last thing on their minds is dental care. However, pregnancy is one of the most important times to pay attention to oral health more than ever! During pregnancy, a woman's body will go through changes and the growing baby will be pulling the nutrients they need to grow from their mother's body. For this reason, it is extra important that you listen to your obstetrician as well as visit your dentist in order to ensure that both you and your baby are taken care of.

Many women experience depleted amount of calcium during and after pregnancy due to not getting adequate amounts through diet or supplement. Since the baby will take what it needs from you to grow, you will be the one to suffer if you do not follow your doctor's instruction. Some women also find that their teeth become weak or may even break because their calcium levels are so low. Additionally, since your immune system is changing, you may also be prone to cavities which is why it is extra important to visit a dentist for an exam and routine cleaning. This is especially delicate in women who have children close in age.

If you are pregnant or have decided to try to become pregnant, we encourage you to contact our dental office to start taking the precautionary measures necessary for the well being of your child. Our dentists in both Glendale and Van Nuys are expertly trained and will be able to care for you and your growing family.

Which is better, braces or Invisalign?

Ever since modern dentistry brought Invisalign to the market, there has been an ongoing debate as to which orthodontic treatment is best. The easy answer is that both treatments are highly effective, but it all boils down to the condition of your teeth in order to determine which treatment is best for you.

Traditional braces are commonly used and many of us may immediately think of a teenager when we think of braces. It is true that metal braces are more commonly used in our younger patients, however, Invisalign can be used in patients of all ages. Braces can be used to correct a variety of dental issues like crowding, overcrowding, bite problems, gaps between teeth, misalignment and more! Modern braces are also becoming more effective and are now be offered in different materials like clear braces and ceramic braces.

Invisalign is a highly effective orthodontic treatment that is use for minor misalignment, gaps and crowding. During the Invisalign treatment, clear trays are provided by our dentist that will be exchanged out every couple of weeks. Typically, results are quick and can be seen within a few months. Invisalign is also a great choice for adults that may be self-conscious about getting traditional braces. Additionally, Invisalign is removable which allows for comfortable eating while also promoting hygiene since it is easier to brush your teeth and clean the trays.

Please contact our office for more information on both Invisalign and braces. After a consultation, our dentist will help you decide which one is best for you!

How long does it take to place a dental implant?

Thanks to modern dentistry, dentists are now able to use dental implants to replace missing teeth. Dental implants are the most effective, long-term solution for replacing teeth. The best part is that they require only minimal care, such as brushing and flossing. They also look completely natural, so no one will even know you have them! But, how long does it take to get a dental implant? Generally, it depends.

From start to finish, dental implants can be placed over several months. The longest part of the dental implant procedure is allowing the gums to heal at the implant site which usually takes about 4 months. Sufficient amount of time needs to pass in order to allow the gums to heal because it is required for successful placement of the implant.

In some cases, when front teeth are involved and there is sufficient amount of healthy bone and gum tissue, it is possible to place the implant and restore it with temporary crown immediately. In this case the temporary crown will be changed to permanent one in about 3-4 months when the implant will be normally integrated with the bone.

In order to be a candidate for dental implants, you must commit to regular visits to our dentists in Glendale and Van Nuys, be in good overall health, refrain from smoking and have enough bone structure to support the dental implant in addition to other requirements as well. If you don’t meet the requirements initially, don’t worry. We will help you address any oral health issues so that you can become a candidate for dental implants.

Remember to call us if you have any questions regarding the dental implant process. We are here for your every need!

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth. According to many dentists, dental implants are the best solution for replacing teeth because they provide long-lasting and near natural results. Additionally, dental implants require no special care, just routine visits to your dentist and regular brushing and flossing.

Dental implants are placed over a series of dental visits. From start to finish, the dental implant procedure usually takes anywhere from 4-6 months due to the gum healing requirement after the implant it placed. They provide a variety of benefits such as restored ability to chew and speak, dramatic improvement of your smile and so much more.

Generally, any patient that is missing a tooth is a candidate for dental implants. Depending on your specific condition and your overall health, our dentist will be able to let you know if dental implants are right for you. Candidates must commit to:
  • Regular visits to the dentist
  • Remain a non-smoker
  • Practice excellent oral care habits

Am I too old for braces?

Braces are used as to correct bite problems and tooth misalignment, whether it is due to gaps, overcrowding or a variety of other dental issues. Most of the population identifies braces as orthodontic treatment that is often completed during late childhood and early teen years. However, braces can be used by patients of all ages. You are never too old to have braces.

While it is recommended to get orthodontic treatment in childhood and adolescence, it is not always accessible at this age depending on the individuals given situation. Some patients may not be able to get braces until later in life, which is completely okay. Thanks to modern dentistry, there are now other orthodontic methods that can be used to correct the same imperfections as traditional metal braces without them being visible or uncomfortable. These methods include Invisalign, Inman Aligners or ceramic braces which are all offered by our dentists in Glendale and Van Nuys.

If you would like to know more information about braces or other orthodontic treatments offered by our dentists, please feel free to contact any one of our offices. Remember, there is no age limit for braces and you are never too old to get the smile you deserve.

Three ways you can make your family's teeth happy this holiday season:

We all want to look our best for the holidays. Why not make you family’s teeth happy this holiday season? We know, we don’t actually mean that the teeth have real feelings like we do. But we do believe that they, too, deserve the same attention that is placed into choosing the right holiday outfit or how you should do you hair. We have the following ideas to get you on the right track:
  • Smile design: There is no better time than now to get the smile design treatment you’ve always wanted. Just in time for the holidays, you can look your best and we can guarantee that there is no accessory more beautiful than a healthy, white smile.
  • Oral care stocking stuffer: We usually stuff stockings with small useful items. Guess what? Oral care products like toothbrushes, mouthwash, floss and toothpaste make for excellent stocking stuffer and also helps remind them to take care of their teeth.
  • Don’t forget to stay hydrated: By hydrated, we mean water. All the festivities and constant snacking can cause us to choose to consume everything but a glass of water. Drinking water is imperative to maintaining a healthy smile and can also help flush away harmful plaque and tartar causing bacteria.
Whatever you and your family are doing this holiday season, we hope you have fun and enjoy the quality time together. We wish you happy holidays and a New Year filled with love, laughter and a healthy smile.
